Anthony Bowers & Theo Mullen (MFA '14) opening Friday, Oct 4th 5-7 in the Morgan Building

Please join us for the first of the new MFA Exhibition Series openings. Anthony Bowers and Theo Mullen will be exhibiting paintings and sculpture related to history, perception, and remembered experience.

This series of one to two person openings gives second year MFA students the opportunity to showcase a larger selection of work than is possible during the group thesis shows, ideally allowing students to make connections between students' individual works outside of the studio. 

Marjorie Von Cura (MFA '02) in group show, 'Color My World' at Space Womb through Oct. 2nd in Manhattan

This ten person show is located at their exciting new Manhattan location, 57 Stanton Street in the Lower East Side. Marjorie will be showing a large painting of oil and galkyd on polyester film.

Featured artists are Hee Jin Roh, Robyn Thomas, Wendi Greorguiev, Haim Elisha, Reina Kubota, Deborah Druick, Marjorie Van Cura, Audree Anid, Ju Hyan Park, Anastasia Teper and Jongwang Lee.

Will Gabaldon (MFA '05) opens solo show 'Uncanny' at Tiger Strikes Astroid, Bushwick, NY location - Oct 18

Uncanny features paintings of places and people significant in the artist’s life: friends and family, places visited and lived in. The subjects are portrayed with familiarity and empathetic humor. Drawn primarily from observation, the images are modified by memory and graphic invention. Using succinct brushwork, rich surfaces and evocative palettes, these paintings stress the importance of the painted image in a world dominated by photographic and digital imagery. These paintings of personal, unique experiences may at first seem unremarkable in today’s media saturated world, but upon further inspection they are testaments to a vision of the world that can only be realized in painting. It is only in painting that elements of comic illustration, caricature, personal touch and abstraction can be incorporated into a fluid shorthand that directly interprets appearances and experience. 

Will Gabaldon was born in Belen, NM. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY with his wife Monica. He was a fellow at Yaddo in 2012.

Nathan Wasserbauer (MFA '06) to open inaugural show at BRIC House in NYC

Wasserbauer builds a home from a dome.

The show, curated by Elizabeth Ferrer, explores the idea of “home” as a flexible, variable concept revealed in a myriad of ways, and influenced by an individual’s history and personal accumulation of places. At its most intimate, home is literally where the heart is; it is the memories and feeling of intimacy we each carry of our own, individual sense of home. It also refers to the domestic sphere, the places we live, the things that surround us, the material objects that become physical markers of home. On the social sphere, home is our neighborhood, the urban and social fabric. In the broadest, universal and most poetic sense, home is the cosmos and the sphere of the unknowable.

Julia Barbosa Landois (MFA '07) solo installation and performance, 'Buried, Not Dead', at Artpace in San Antonio, TX

Inspired by the toil and tunneling of ants on display in an ant farm, artist Julia Barbosa Landois presents Buried, Not Dead in Artpace’s Main Avenue storefront windows. Her installation creates parallels between the paths of ant constructions and of one’s ancestors' migration through history and geography. Landois will perform live at the exhibition opening at 7:30 pm on September 12th, telling the story of a transcendent experience in ant farming, accompanied by musician Erik Sanden on guitar. The exhibition runs throughDecember 29th.

Julia Barbosa Landois (MFA '07) featured in 2013 Texas Biennial

Video and performance works by Julia Barbosa Landois will be featured in this year's Texas Biennial exhibition, an independent survey of contemporary art in Texas curated by Bill Arning, René Paul Barilleaux, Christian Gerstheimer, K8 Hardy, Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler, Annette Lawrence, David Pagel, Bárbara Perea, Christina Rees, Dario Robleto, Noah Simblist, Jeremy Strick, and Clint Willour. Her video, Star-Crossed II, is on view at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum in San Antonio, TX until November 9th. Landois will also perform Culo de Oro/The Golden Ass, a multimedia piece about sex work on the Texas/Mexico border, at Centraltrak in Dallas, TX on September 21st.

Sarah Anderson (MFA '12) presents in the SENSEI Exchange Series, NYC

Sarah Anderson’s first project with Sensei includes a two-channel video, sculpture, and encaustic paintings. Anderson’s work frequently deals with the intimate re-scaled to envision a public life punctuated by the erotic.

Characters in literature often embody disparate aspects of a single consciousness. Romancing: The Head and the Whale attempts to do something similar in video, painting, and sculpture. Together, the three sets of works propose multiple viewpoints that form a cohesive perspective on the relationship between destruction, language, and desire.

Wilmer Wilson (MFA '15) opening a solo show at Connersmith Gallery in DC, September 21st 6-8pm

Wilson shoots with ladders.

In a new body of work featuring live performance, photographs, and sculptural installation, Wilson explores intersections between cultural desire and black masculinity. Taking Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s German romantic literary masterpiece Faust as a point of departure, Wilson brings to life a contemporary quest for metaphysical ascent, a cultural climb replete with the temptations and distractions of an urban landscape. The artist queries claims to truth in art and narrative progression, while blurring lines between documentation and artifice in performance-based work. Using ladders, lottery tickets, and emergency Crisco lanterns, Wilson will interact with the spaces occupied by his audience as his durational performance unfolds in the gallery.

A second component of Wilson’s performance will occur across the city of Washington, D.C. Beginning at 10:30am Monday, September 16, Wilson will walk carrying a ladder for three to four hours, from one of D.C.’s least affluent spots to one its wealthiest, traveling on foot from Marvin Gaye Park to the Georgetown Waterfront, via Benning Road, C Street, Massachusetts Avenue and K Street.

Tara White (MFA '13) is in an upcoming group show at Kustraum Kreuzburg in Berlin

But will tomorrow be the future tomorrow?

Tara White will be in an upcoming group show filled with art stars and those of the names you should know. The opening is tomorrow, Friday September 6th.

TOMORROW It's TIME FOR THE FUTURE shows young talents from Berlin and New York, two of the most interesting art cities. The exhibition focuses on the close relationship and the rain transnational exchanges between artists on both sides of the Atlantic, from the community of artists projects or even adult can. Berlin is among the creators of New York as an art mecca of the 21st century and is frequently referred to as the "sixth district" just behind Manhattan and Brooklyn. Side by side with lesser-known names, the exhibition includes works by established and successful in the art market protagonists, which emerging artists inspired and place in an art-historical context. "Tomorrow it's time for the future" thus allows an overview of generations of artists as well as an outlook on the future of art, it focuses on their potential for development. Where do artistic ideas? What are themes that recur on both sides of the Atlantic and stand? The result is an exhibition of painting and performance, sculpture and video, in which is seen as forms and ideas spread both across generations and across continents and continue to develop.

Daniel Gerwin (MFA '08) in the Fleisher Art Memorial's Wind Challenge Exhibition, Opening September 6th

Daniel Gerwin uses trompe l’oeil painting to simulate wood grain, alluding to floors, doors, window frames, and furniture. In some cases he paints directly onto salvaged domestic items such as rocking chairs, mirrors, and dresser drawers, using painted marks to transform these objects, like insects isolated in amber. Gerwin does not seek to illustrate or directly describe our relationship to the domestic, but rather to abstract it. In his work, trompe l'oeil folds in on itself to become a language of imagination and psychological resonance.

Trawick Bouscaren (MFA '12) to co-curate and present in upcoming exhibitions at "My Future Ex" in Buffalo, NY

On September 17th, "My Future Ex", will have a soft gallery opening at the Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY.

Focused on the celebration of temporary relationships between people, materials and places, "My Future Ex" presents a diversity of contemporary approaches to the practice of installation and performance art. Curated by Tra Bouscaren (MFA '12) and Sandra Q. Firmin, the exhibition features an ambitious mixture of local, national, and international talent in a kaleidoscopic series of installations and events, spanning 11 locations across the city of Buffalo throughout the Fall season. The exhibition includes PennDesign MFA graduates including Tamara Suber (MFA '11), John Schlesinger (MFA '11), and Tra Bouscaren (MFA '12).
