Alumnus and Penn Professor Matt Neff (MFA '05) opens a show at the Print Center in Philadelphia, Apr 3rd

Neff reflects on the nature of medium in his work "Four of Us".

Alumnus and Penn Professor Matt Neff (MFA '05) will be opening a show at the Print Center in Philadelphia, Apr 3rd with prints from Terry Adkins portfolio made in collaboration with the Common Press.

Matt Neff's exhibition, Second Sight, features prints, photographs and sculptural works characterized by a complex layering of process, medium and concept and an experimental use of materials. The exhibition is curated by The Print Center’s Executive Director, Elizabeth Spungen.

Within Second Sight is a project space titled Second SITE, where Neff will be in residence. It serves as an evolving studio, exhibition, meeting, performance and research venue for interaction with artists, curators, writers and community members. Second SITE will change weekly. This immersive gallery experiment opens up the often impermeable barrier between viewing and making and is sure to result in interesting conversations and creations. Go to www.printcenter.org for information on Second SITE programing. 

In conjunction with Neff's exhibition, The Print Center will be showing Terry Adkins & The Common Press: 7th Ward.

Terry Adkins (1953–2014) created the portfolio The Philadelphia Negro Reconsidered in collaboration with The Common Press at the University of Pennsylvania, which is directed by Matt Neff. The portfolio was inspired by The Philadelphia Negro - W.E.B. Du Bois’ pioneering demographic study of Philadelphia’s original 7th Ward, the neighborhood in which The Print Center is located. The exhibition is supported by the Department of Fine Arts, School of Design, University of Pennsylvania.

Sascha Hughes-Caley (MFA '15) will have video work in the Imperfectu International Film and Gender Studies Festival

Sasha's video Sportsman (Trophy) has been selected by Imperfectu International Film and Gender Studies Festival to be screened in Tijuana, Mexico, between April 1st -6th, 2014 and later again this year in Berlin, Germany (dates TBA).

Sasha's video and performance work investigates American male culture at large and it's relationship to sexual entitlement.

Orlando de la Garza (MFA'13) is opening a show in San Francisco on Wed Apr 9th

Recent graduate Orlando de la Garza will be opening a show in his new home city of San Francisco at the venue, Aritsts' Television Access. The high-fructose show, Cream Pie Party, you left a hot mess promises to be as titillating as the title suggests. 

Orlando's imagist inspired fantasy paintings will be accompanied by the live music of Banda Sin Nombre at the opening on Wednesday night, April 9th.

Joan Oh (MFA '15) participates in international group show "STATE ABED"

STATE ABED international exhibition & conference 

Following a feminist maxim THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL, as well as relying upon our reasons why we deal with feminisms, what makes us publicly declare ourselves feminists, we have come up with the exhibition title STATE ABED. We would like to know how deep and in what ways the system, the state, the authorities and politics govern our life as well as to what extent and for what reasons they have the urge to enter and control our lives, bedrooms, bodies and minds. We would especially like to reveal the ways we accept or do not accept their seductions, kisses, orders and violences. We would like to strip off the system the way the system strips us off. We would like to hit the system back, or kiss it back. We ask for your ideas, concepts, works, your ways and your stories which will help us unravel this story and find out why we have the feeling that this lovemaking is actually an act of rape and what consequences it has on the personal. Which is political. Which is personal.

The show was on display from Feb 1st - 21st in Croatia.

Jessica Vaughn (MFA '11) included in Houston, Project Row Houses' Round 39: Looking Back, Moving Forward

Jessica Vaughn’s sound installation "Right-of-way-Acquisition" collected the sounds of the highways cutting through the Third Ward, infrastructure for the greater city that has also stifled economic development and social mobility in the neighborhood it crosses. A megaphone plays the recorded sounds for the visitor while also allowing the visitor’s sounds to be added into the piece through microphones placed throughout the room. Vaughn describes this as “call and response” where the archive continually expands from the depersonalized sounds of the highway to include more and more traces of individual human connection.

Ceaphas Stubbs (MFA '13) opens solo show, "...And Everything Will Be Created Here..." in California

Ceaphas Stubbs  "The Flesh is Weak"  2013

Recent graduate Ceaphas Stubbs has opened his first solo show in the Los Angeles marking his triumphant return to the city after his thesis exhibition there in Chinatown nearly a year ago. This exhibition also marks the christening of a new Culver City space for the Reginald Ingraham Gallery which is displaying Ceaphas' work until April 12th.

Ceaphas Stubbs' photographs are a exploration in narrative weight and meaning, as well as a complex practice. He layers ready made and found images and objects to construct luxurious still life scenes that challenge the viewer to examine relationships between physicality and desire. The painterly quality of Stubb's visual tropes is both a critique and a declaration of the power and value of iconography. The three dimensionality of the photographs is an invitation for conversation; an entry point to investigate associations and signifiers that subvert ritual and evoke nuance through color, space and imagery. The texture rich collages reference a shifting symbolism similary seen in Dali's playful surreal compositions, while being firmly grounded in the influential photographic considerations advanced by such artists as Zeke Berman and other luminaries in photography.

Amy Archambault (MFA '11) installs solo exhibition at 17 Cox, opening Thursday Feb 6

Amy Archambault's site specific installation inside 17 Cox is part obstacle course, part habitrail and part modular home. As both a lacrosse coach and a studio supervisor, Archambault is interested in combining the human drive for athleticism and artistic expression, and encouraging others to do the same in her work. Her installation turns 17 Cox into an arena for both spectatorship and participation. Visitors can either observe her bright, colorful constructions as sculpture or take off their shoes and participate in the various obstacles. The palette for this installation is based on color psychology used in modern workout facilities where colors can promote productivity or increase heart rate. Multiple pathways through the gallery are designed for different levels of engagement and Archambault includes demonstration videos of her performances. Visitors will be encouraged to "work out" in the gallery during the exhibition, and even submit their scores in a time trial during the March 6 reception.

The National Association of Women Artists' "Small Works Exhibition' is one of the first in N.A.W.A.'s 125th anniversary year. Original artworks measure 15 x 15" or less, or 15" high for sculptures. One of two shows per year that is open to non-members, this annual juried show continues to present jurors with the difficult task of selecting the very finest works in a variety of media. There will be three prizes awarded, with first prize being a solo or two-person show in the N.A.W.A. Gallery. As a part of the 2013 Art Matters grants program, Jacolby Satterwhite was awarded support for the expansion of the artist’s current performance and video practice into sculpture with the purchase of a 3D printer and Nina Katchadourian received support for a collaborative trip with Laurel Braitman, historian of science, to the Lagoon of San Ignacio in Baja California for research on ballenas amistosas (friendly whales).


Art Matters is a juried, invitation only award. Each round they select a national group of recognized artists, curators, and other arts leaders to nominate artists to apply. Art Matters awards grants of $3,000-$10,000 to U.S. artists for projects that are socially engaged with a focus on local, national and/or global concerns. They fund individuals, collectives and collaborative teams working all visual media including experimental performance, and film.

Recent graduate Ceaphas Stubbs will be featured in the 22nd annual African American Art Show and Sale presented by Art in the Atrium, Inc.

The exhibition will include the work of more than 25 black artists to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. The title of the exhibition, is “Your Crown has Been Bought and Paid For…..,’’ a quote from African-American author James Baldwin. The second line is “… All you have to do it wear it.’’

Thomas Isaac (MFA '06) is exhibiting his video Stardance at Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum in Texas

Stardance is a video work serving as a meditation on our relationship to time and how we experience present time. Within the piece, time is suspended and slowed down to the point where our current relationship with the present, 1 second to 1 second, is no more, creating an artificial "dreamtime". Not only is the video slowed down, but the soundtrack -- a 3 minute commissioned sound piece by P. Adrian Frasier https://soundcloud.com/padrianfrazier -- is slowed down and expanded to 3 hours, the running time of the entire video work.

The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibitionMary Reid Kelley: Working Objects and Videos. The exhibition opens to the public on Wednesday, January 22, with a public opening reception to be held on Saturday, February 8.

The exhibition will be the first museum exhibition devoted to the finely crafted and researched costumes, objects, furniture, and drawings that Reid Kelley creates for her acclaimed videos. Kelsey Halliday Johnson (MFA '12) is exhibiting in DUE NORTH, opening at the Icebox tonight 1/9

Kelsey Halliday Johnson has helped to organize a collaborative exhibition featuring American and Icelandic artists. The show opens at Icebox this evening and continues through January. 


“North” is a space upon which we project our desire for raw wilderness, for solitude, and the terrifying beauty of the sublime. Both real and imagined, Iceland, from an outsider’s perspective is viewed as exotic, treacherous, mythical and supernatural. In wintertime, darkness and brutal winds prevail; there is a turning inwards as one battles the elements. As foreigners, travelling together in February 2013, we both viscerally and physically explored Iceland’s unforgiving landscape and its inherent narratives.

Taking cues from our Nordic counterparts, participants opened themselves to qualities found at the very heart of Icelandic art making: a wild independence, reverence for untamed nature, ancient and intimate links to the sea, a sense of mystery and unquiet stillness in everyday life, and paradoxical qualities of the land (black and white; fire and ice).

Shaped daily by an elemental landscape in flux, Icelandic artists embody and channel the energies of the land. As travelers, we allowed this geology to reshape the terra incognita of our imaginations, a journey of the mind and heart.

Jacolby Satterwhite (MFA 2010) and three University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts professors, Terry Adkins, Ken Lum and Joshua Mosley, have been selected to participate in the 2014 edition of the Whitney Biennial. Featuring 103 artists from across the country, the event will be held at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The Biennial's three curators, Stuart Comer, Anthony Elms and Michelle Grabner, will each organize one floor of the exhibition. The announcement that Penn will be represented in such unique ways on all three floors reflects the diversity of our program's strengths and abilities to synthesize a very broad range of approaches to practice-based research.

"Oh’s large-scale works were the standout of the Corcoran College of Art and Design’s student show. Working on the Internet frontier, Oh downloaded tourist photos of the pyramids of Giza, Niagara Falls, and Stonehenge from around the Web, then organized them into seven-by-10-foot arrays to illustrate patterns of “redundancy” in the human travel experience, as well as the 'validation' that people get from sharing their snapshots—a timely exploration in the age of social media. Oh’s works in the series offer the perfect combination of intellectual heft and visual skill."

Demetrius Oliver (MFA '04) is opening solo show Canicular at the Print Center, opening Thursday 1/9

In January 2014, The Print Center will premiere Canicular: Demetrius Oliver, a major newly commissioned work by the artist. As the curator of the exhibition, I have had the pleasure of working with Oliver over the last three years on this exhibition. This blog will introduce Canicular, document it once it is on view and provide information and resources related to the project.

Canicular is a new video installation, by artist Demetrius Oliver, that will consist of a projected, live-feed from a high-power telescope focused on Sirius (the brightest star in the night sky). The video will be projected in a round structure, built within one of The Print Center’s galleries to resemble a small observatory. The installation will also include a related, multi-part video installation in an adjacent gallery. The term Canicular is used to describe things pertaining to dogs, and is often used in reference to Sirius, the Dog Star. The live-feed will come from a telescope mounted on the roof of The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA, one of the oldest centers of science education and development in the United States.

Oliver will essentially convert the gallery spaces into an observatory which will only be open for one hour each night to coincide with the rising of Sirius in the night sky. The Print Center’s gallery spaces will not be open during regular hours but will only be open from 7:00-8:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, weather permitting (the sky has to be clear to see the stars!). A sign featuring a photographic image of dog fur created by Oliver, visible from the street, will be illuminated to announce when the exhibition is on view. An audio component, composed and performed by the artist on a dog whistle (and therefore inaudible to human ears), will also be broadcast from the front of the building during viewing times.

This two person exhibition explores the complicated nature of defining or creating the muse. The controlled yet ungovernable presence of artificial figuration is both source of the subject and hindrance to what is seen or what is to be developed in Ivanco Talevski’s paintings.  Pernot Hudson will present work as both a support of this notion as well as a counter argument or complete rejection of the idea. Responding directly to these two positions onsite, both artists will create work to comment on the relationship to the artificial nature of stimulus as both subject and necessity. Relics, a group show featuring Kelsey Halliday Johnson (MFA '12) is opening Friday, Dec 6th at Vox Populi

Photographs have the ability to represent, even reanimate history. They serve as reminders of where one has been or what one has seen—artifacts through which historical events can be reconsidered, new associations made, and new meaning assigned to those events in ways that can bring the past to bear upon the present-day.

The digitization of images has begun to erode a sense of history from the photographic image. The immediate seduction and gratification of the digital on-screen image allows them to operate as portals to ahistorical fantasies. To memorialize an image through the act of printing is an increasingly rare act. Once a photograph becomes physical, the surface is pushed forward and the associative context thickens. Within a disposable image culture, Stephanie Bursese, Julianna Foster, and Kelsey Halliday Johnson are artists committed to working with the printed image and printed matter.

This exhibition evolved from a set of conversations between the three artists, each of whom works with the photographic image as their primary medium. Through the collection of photographs in books and the clustering of images on the wall, the work encourages viewers to read between images and draw connections within their constellation.

Terry Adkins exhibiting his solo show, Nenuphar, at Salon 94 through January 11th

As many of you know by now, senior faculty member Terry Adkins is currently exhibiting his most recent work in a solo show at Salon 94. The critically acclaimed work draws upon his use of material exploration to reexamine historical and art-historical narratives. Work from this series was also exhibited in Frieze London by Salon 94 and the Tate Modern recently purchased a marquee 2003 work, Muffled Drums (from Darkwater).

Lugo Land is pleased to present “What I don’t have” by Iranian artist Mohammadreza Mirzaei. This project is being presented in two volumes, and two different forms of representation: A story and a photo series both happening in same time and same place. What is the relationship between these two booklets? Are they different chapters of same story? The answer is left to the audience. “What I don’t have” can be read as a collision of truth and fiction in photography and is hopefully suggesting a new way of storytelling.

There Is Still Time - Group show featuring alum/faculty Marc Blumthal, Pernot Hudson, Matt Neff, & Ivanco Talevski - Sat. Dec 7th in Hells Kitchen NYC

A pithy commentary on the nature of eternity.

Marc Blumthal, Pernot Hudson, Matt Neff, & Ivanco Talevski will all have work on display at the Gallery MC in Manhattan. This show promises include innovative combinations of printmaking and painting covering a wide range of subject matter inquiries. The art displayed, however, is also sure to be cohesive as all these artists work is undoubtedly influenced by their mutual friendships forged in the bowels of the Morgan Printshop and stamped with the indelible mark of their founding the Common Press. Regardless of what the title suggests, the show is on view for a limited time only, closing before Christmas on Dec 20th so make plans to attend before you head home for the holidays.

Colombia University's, Interventions is conceptualized as a curatorial platform featuring essays, interviews, web-based art projects, and experimental investigations of the implicit cross-sections between these practices. Flexible in format, the project aims to cultivate dialogue amongst a diverse body of participants including curators, artists, and art and architectural historians in order to establish a common space and archive of exchange.

The MFA Exhibition Series continues with the olfactory investigations and collaborations of Evan Nabrit and Claire Bidwell. Both artists mine the dark recesses of our contemporary collective subconscious, combining kitsch, subcultural memes, and traditional high art figuration into something that smells a lot more ominous than we ever would have expected from either their effervescent personalities or their intentionally saccharine subjects.

Kate Stewart (MFA '03) has two solo exhibitions in November at Seraphin Gallery and West Chester University

Stewart's show is stacked.

Displayed at the the Knauer Gallery at West Chester University, Götterdämmerung is a second iteration of an installation that reveals Stewart's continued interest in make-shift structures, that contrast themes of whimsy and urgency. Stewart designed wallpaper and fabric specifically for this project, using edible native plants and construction fencing as source imagery.

Her combinations of manmade and natural, whimsey and urgency continue as sources and subjects in her paintings to be displayed in an upcoming exhibition Ex-Voto at Philadelphia gallery, Seraphin opening Friday, November 15th.
